Who we are
Our Whiteshell story started in the early 1970’s, when David’s Uncle Henry ran the resort on Betula Lake. Inspired by his love of nature and his brother’s unusual career choice, David’s father Neil bought the resort on the south shore of Big Whiteshell Lake from Marguerite and Julian Decaigney in 1979. David spent his childhood helping out, learning the ins and outs of running a resort, and falling in love with life at the lake. In June of 1986, Liberty hiked the Mantario Hiking Trail as part of a junior high school trip, vowing she would return again someday. She never dreamed that she would end up living on Big Whiteshell Lake a mere 5 years later. In 1991 David and Liberty married, and they took over the resort from his parents. Building on that foundation of family, care, and a deep respect for the outdoors. Today, we’re proud to continue that tradition—offering a place where families, fishermen, and nature-lovers can truly feel at home. We have raised two children, 3 dogs, and a host of young employees at Whiteshell Lake Resort over the years, and are pleased to greet friends returning every year. In our offtime, when the Resort is closed, we have travelled the world several times, living in Scotland so David could complete a PhD in Philosophy. He is a motorcycle enthusiast and has travelled through the US for the past few winters. Liberty has extensive training in Theater and Film acting, and has written and performed on stage in Scotland and New York. She is currently working on a new film script to be produced in the next year.
