Fishing & Boats
Catch a fish at Mallard Falls, or climb Castle Rock and enjoy the breathtaking view. There are some wonderful boating destinations within Big Whiteshell Lake and the surrounding lake system.
For our guests who don't usually fish, we have a few complementary fishing rods available on loan, and would be more than happy to demonstrate some of the finer points of fishing and how to clean & cook your fish for dinner!
Cabin guests are welcome to park their own boats free of charge on our dock and at designated areas along the beach. There is a public boat launch adjacent to the resort. Guests may use our fish cleaning shack to fillet their day’s catch, and we will freeze them for you at no extra cost.
Big Whiteshell Lake is approximately 7km long, and 3 1/2km wide. The central areas of the lake average around 7m (20-25ft) in depth, although some areas exceed 12m (40ft) in depth. Fish species found in the lake include Northern Pike (jackfish), Walleye (pickerel), Perch, as well as the occasional Tulibee and Whitefish. Northern Pike and Walleye are generally caught with jigs, minnows, or night-crawlers (worms), which are available for sale in our store. Success in catching Walleye depends a great deal on the season and location, as well as the ambient temperature of the lake. Generally, fishing is best in the cooler months of May, June and September.
